Lucky to be a tenured teacher (with National Board Certification)

According to the NY Times, teacher hiring appears to be in dismal shape right now across the country. Here in Philadelphia, we are in the midst of a hiring freeze, most likely due to an overhiring of teachers last year and the emergence of "Renaissance Schools" - whereby most of a school's staff needs to be let go. Being protected by a union, these staff are placed at other schools throughout the district; hence, no we don't need any more teachers (but the schools who have let go of their staff do, right?).

It's all statistical shenanigans, if you ask me. At my school, we are about to go from 100 teachers to roughly 60. I can't even imagine how this thing will looks next year.

In these times of uncertainty, it's good to be a tenured teacher with skills and credentials that others don't have. It's easy as a teacher to hide out in your classroom and do your own thing, but if no one ever sees your face, if you don't make your presence known in your school, you're dead weight.

PS. The NY Times article quotes that "most of the 90 graduates" from UPenn's Ed School have not gotten jobs yet. My student teacher, Deep, however, is NOT one of them. She'll be rocking AP English down in DC!

Hi Madeline,

Firstly, thank you for having such a great Blog(s)!!!! (+ attitude and outlook on life).

I agree with some of your other blog followers that have posted "you are an inspiration to us all" - totally!

I found your blog when i was looking for the answer to a question about the poem in G.I. Jane, and came accross your post "There's poetry in G.I. Jane".

Admittedly i've not read every post on your blog (yet!), but what i have read so far has been enlightening, impressive, heart warming & encouraging for life, for all.

Plus, as someone who is also interested in amateur photography, i enjoyed looking through your photo portfolio blog.

You have a creative eye, as well as a creative mind.

Its nice to see a little bit of Philadelphia through your eye's and your lens.... (especially as i've never been there). Although, seeing your pictures of Niagra Falls & New York, it did remind me of when i travelled there in the past.

Living here in England we see a lot of America on our t.v's (and internet), via programs & films.

So Philadelphia is not just famous for its namesake film, but to me for films like Rocky, 12 monkeys, National Treasure, Trading Places, et al.... (you can tell i'm a movie fan!)

All i can ask is.... please post more thoughts, poems, photo's, ideas, news/current affairs snippets that you like to share with the world and your daily ramblings on life.

You are truly a teacher to us all - both near and far!

Keep up the good work Madeline.

You definately get an "A+" & "Gold Star" from me and go to top of the class!!

Thank you :-)

Greg - from Barnstaple, Devon, England.
